19th century baby cot beds

The style and design of cot beds has changed a lot since the beginning of the twentieth century. Nowadays furniture is much simpler and much more practical than it used to be in the past. Vintage, old-fashioned cots are becoming trendy again, but manufacturers are trying to combine old design with modern technologies. Beds are usually made of more practical materials, they are easy to clean and much safer for little children. So, what kind of beds did our great-great-grandparents sleep in? Well, they were usually big, heavy beds made of dark wood. They were often lavishly decorated to match all other furniture items in the house. Of course, style and design depended on what kind of family and social class we are talking about. The poorer families used much simpler furniture, which was also not very safe. Several children were often placed in one bed, which is something that greatly increases the risks of suffocation and dangerous accidents. Baby cot beds were not the only type of beds available for newborn children. Simple cots were also very popular. They were much smaller, used with decorative baby bedding sets, usually white or beige, and often used by several generations of children.
